Marsh, Herbert W.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Results of a reanalysis of previously published data (B. M. Byrne, 1989) support the correlated uniqueness model, diagnostic tests of the validity of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), multitrait multimethod (MTMM) solutions, inclusion of external validity in MTMM design, and application of factorial invariance to test stability of CFA-MTMM…

Marsh, Herbert W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
Findings and research designs used to study university students' evaluations of teaching effectiveness are reviewed. A construct validation approach which recognizes the multidimensionality of both effective teaching and students' evaluations is recommended for further research. (BS)

Marsh, Herbert W.; Richards, Garry E. – 1984
The purposes of the present investigation were to examine the dimensionality of the Rotter Internal-External (I-E) scale, to test the invariance of its factor structure before and after an intervention designed to alter I-E, and to demonstrate the use of confirmatory factor analysis. An a priori model based on the content of the Rotter items…

Marsh, Herbert W. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1993
Structural equation models of the same construct collected on different occasions are evaluated in 2 studies involving the evaluation of 157 college instructors over 8 years and data for over 2,200 high school students over 4 years for the Youth in Transition Study. Results challenge overreliance on simplex models. (SLD)

Marsh, Herbert W. – International Journal of Educational Research, 1987
A number of research reports and meta analyses on student evaluation of college teaching were reviewed. Student ratings were found to be multidimensional, reliable, valid, and relatively unbiased. Results were useful for feedback, course selection, and personnel decisions. Marsh's Students' Evaluations of Educational Quality (SEEQ) was also…

Marsh, Herbert W.; And Others – American Educational Research Journal, 1985
The Self Description Questionnaire II (SDQII) results from 901 Australian secondary school students were factor analyzed and the factors correlated to identify the relationship of self-concept factors to age, sex, and academic achievement. Findings supported the multidimensionality of self-concept and support the construct validity of the SDQII.…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Overall, J. U. – Research in Higher Education, 1979
Results of a follow-up study of the same students used in the Feldman study indicate that individual student evaluations are remarkably stable over time and more reliable than previously assumed. There was systematic information in individual student ratings that internal consistency approaches have ignored or assumed to be nonexistent.…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Bailey, Michael – Journal of Higher Education, 1993
The "Students Evaluation of Educational Quality" is an instrument measuring dimensions of college teaching effectiveness. A study showed that, for ratings of 123 instructors in 3,079 classes over 13 years, each instructor has a distinct profile of ratings that generalizes over time, different courses, and course level. Marsh, Herbert W. – American Educational Research Journal, 1982
Differences in ratings of the same instructor teaching the same course on two different occasions are related to differences in background characteristics: (1) higher levels of workload/difficulty, (2) higher expected grades, and (3) instructor experience. (PN)

Marsh, Herbert W. – 1987
H. W. Marsh's monograph (1987) on students' evaluations of teaching effectiveness in higher education is summarized. The research, which emphasized the construct validity approach, led to the development of the Students' Evaluations of Educational Quality (SEEQ) instrument. Factor analysis resulted in identification of nine SEEQ factors--learning…

Overall, Jesse U., IV; Marsh, Herbert W. – AAHE Bulletin, 1982
Recent research (1978-1982) on student evaluations of teaching is reviewed, including: influence of background variables pertaining to the student, the teacher, and the learning environment; the dimensions of the teaching being evaluated; the validity of students' evaluations; the "Doctor Fox" effect and its implications for validity; the…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Ireland, Robert – 1984
To test the applicability of multidimensional ratings of writing effectiveness that are amenable to normal classroom usage, all grade 7 students (N=139) from one suburban school (Sydney, Australia) wrote a brief essay. Master and student teachers evaluated all the essays according to overall effectiveness of written expression and according to…

Marsh, Herbert W.; And Others – 1984
Items from two American instruments (Students' Evaluation of Educational Effectiveness, and the Endeavor instrument) designed to measure students' evaluations of teaching effectiveness were translated into Spanish and administered to a sample of Spanish university students. Most of the items were judged by the students to be appropriate; every…

Beatty, Brondon; Marsh, Herbert W. – 1974
A set of 65 evaluation questions was compiled from published instruments. A total of 200 undergraduate students rated both their best and worst teacher from the previous term. Each of the set of 65 items was rated twice for the best teacher and twice for the worst teacher, with order randomized. Factor analysis of ratings of the Best Teachers, the…

Marsh, Herbert W. – 1992
Students' evaluations of teacher effectiveness are explored as a multidimensional construct, emphasizing the Students' Evaluations of Educational Quality (SEEQ) instrument developed by H. W. Marsh (1987). An overview is presented of studies in which Marsh evaluated longitudinal data from an archive of responses to nearly 1 million SEEQ instruments…
