Only a full scale effort will make multicultural education a success at the middle school level. Multicultural education programs must be integrated into all levels of the school day, from curriculum and instructional materials through all the components of the middle school experience. Chapter 1 looks at the country's increasing cultural diversity and explores the obstacles culturally diverse learners face. Chapter 2 explores the concept of multicultural education and societal ills. Essential middle school concepts and program elements are explored in Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 focuses on the curriculum and an integrated approach to multicultural education. A section of Chapter 4 examines appropriate teaching strategies for linguistically diverse learners. Chapter 5 then lists organizational and published resources teachers can consult. Middle-level schools can become even more significant in the lives of young adolescents and can become models for other schools to emulate when teachers deal with cultural diversity in ways that enrich the curriculum, demonstrate respect for all people, and attack all forms of ill treatment.
