State Education Indicators with a Focus on Title I, 1997.
Blank, Rolf K.; Manise, Jennifer Gifford; Brathwaite, Barbara C.
This report presents information across states on a number of education indicators. It offers state profile information about students and their achievement, teachers, and standards for student learning. It also includes special data about the education of children in poverty and the assistance they receive toward achieving state standards through Title I, the largest single federal education program. A particular feature of this edition is the display of trend data state-by-state. Indicators were selected through consultation with states, education researchers, data managers, and educators. For each state profile, indicators are grouped under five headings. The first, state context, gives a picture of the characteristics of each state that affect public education strongly. Information is reported on the development and use of state content standards, central to Title I plans and programs, as well as on teacher preparation and professional development. The third heading, school and teacher demographics, presents information from the Common Core of Data. The fourth heading, student demographics, includes information on students by race and ethnicity, as well as information about students with disabilities, limited English proficient students, and migrant students. The final heading, student achievement, provides state information about academic achievement. Profiles are included for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Four appendixes present a summary of state standards, student achievement results for the states, achievement results disaggregated by student characteristics, and National Assessment of Educational Progress definitions and information. Sources for the data are reviewed in a separate section. Each state profile contains three graphs. (SLD)
