In an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of its nursing program, William Rainey Harper College (WRHC) (Illinois) conducted a follow-up study of 1992 nursing graduates or alumni. In spring 1993, a survey instrument, inquiring about employment status, future educational plans, and evaluation of their experience at WRHC, was mailed to all 142 WRHC nursing students who earned 48 credit hours in 1992. Study findings, based on a 100% response rate, included following: (1) 86% of the nursing alumni had achieved an associate degree; (2) 33.1% of the alumni were still enrolled in school, compared to 23% in a 1992 study; (3) over 90% of the alumni were working in jobs that were identical or closely related to the nursing field; (4) nursing alumni rated their preparation in technical job skills and specific job knowledge highly, with the lowest rated areas of preparation including managerial and job search skills; (5) an increase in the extent to which the nursing graduates supervise the work of others was reported, with one-third of alumni supervising on a regular basis; (6) the average salary increased from $28,675 for 1990 alumni to $30,980 for 1992 alumni; (7) 90% of the students indicated that they were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with WRHC, more than had indicated "very satisfied" before; and (8) the leading fields of work included medicine (22%), surgery (16%), psychiatric (10%), and intensive care unit (7%), with nearly three-fourths working in hospitals.
