Student Characteristics as Compared to the Community Profile--1977-1978. Volume IX, No. 17.
Lucas, John A.
Random samples of 405 traditional credit students at Harper College (3.2% of the student population) and 199 continuing education (CED) students (2.5% of total CED population) were surveyed by mail to provide a fall 1977 student profile. Response rates of 86% for traditional credit and 76% for CED students were obtained. Automated student data and community demographic data were also gathered. Changes among the characteristics of students revealed by the study included: female enrollment continued to grow faster than male enrollment; the proportion of full-time students and day students continued to decline; the average age of students stabilized; fewer students than in the past planned to pursue degrees; and out-of-district enrollment dropped sharply due to one district's change in chargeback policy. The study also examined the following student characteristics: class load size, where and when students enrolled, marital status, number of children, employment, income of independent students and families of dependent students, ethnic background, language most used at home, means of transportation, intention of remaining at Harper, college major, educational background and objectives, reasons for attending Harper, sources of information at Harper, and future plans. Results of the survey are detailed, comparisons of student data with community data are drawn, and the survey instrument is included. (Author/MB)
