Surveys were mailed to the 257 students who had enrolled in the first of the core courses in the architecture transfer program (ARC) at Harper College between 1969 and 1978. Of the target population, 18% had stopped at this point; 22% had enrolled in two ARC courses; 20% had enrolled in three ARC courses; 21% had met minimum requirements by taking both ARC core courses and a math course; and 19% had met all requirements by taking four ARC courses and a math course. Of respondents, 72% were in the transfer architecture design program; 25% had achieved a bachelor's degree; and all averaged over a 3.0 grade point average at their transfer institution, as compared to an average of 2.64 at Harper. The study found that 93% of all attempts to transfer courses were successful. In addition, the number of courses a student took was found to be related to grade point average and to whether the student remained with immediate goals in the field or in college--the group meeting full requirements had a significantly higher grade point average and a higher rate of persistence in the field. Among the employed respondents, drafting and designing were the most commonly used responsibilities. Cost estimating was followed by writing specifications and interior design in ranking by use. Student evaluations rated ARC courses between "somewhat beneficial" and "very beneficial." Survey results are detailed, and the survey instrument is appended. (Author/MB)
