In Defense of a Practice
Lipka, Sara
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n25 pA33 Feb 2007
Some athletics officials worry that, on many campuses, male practice players are taking opportunities away from female athletes. In an effort to try keeping second-string players off the sidelines, the NCAA's Committee on Women's Athletics has recommended banning male practice players in all women's sports. The proposal has touched off a fierce debate in all three divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Many women's coaches and female athletes are outraged by the prospect of a ban. They argue against any limits on male practice players, whom they see as valuable training partners. What bothers coaches most about the debate is the prospect of losing control over their own practices. To try to prevent that from happening, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, which opposes any limits on male practice players, has distributed sample practice routines to its members. The documents, which illustrate how male practice players can be used most effectively, are designed in part to show NCAA officials that coaches want to be the ones to decide what's best for their teams.
