Qualitative Research and the Radical Right: Cats and Dogs and Other Natural Enemies.
Lincoln, Yvonna S.; Cannella, Gaile S.
This investigation was conducted to explore contemporary critiques that challenge the growing body of scholarly research that would reveal and support diverse understandings of the world. Principal methods for this deconstruction of contemporary critiques include document analysis of writing that examines content and author location and context and the juxtaposition of recent academic critiques of qualitative inquiry with political discourses and actions from a broader societal perspective than academia in the time period surrounding the emergence of perspectives that challenge the existence of universalist truth. The analyses demonstrate a lack of knowledge about diverse views of research and methods by those who are providing the criticisms. Integrated with that lack of knowledge is a fear of diversity and the beliefs that scholarly "sound bites" and the confusions of content can be used to control the values and expectations of others. It is apparent that more penetrating deconstructive analyses might be conducted to elucidate the politicization of research. (Contains 43 references.) (SLD)
