This document consists of a 5-day high school level study unit on issues surrounding immigration into the United States. The lessons seek to engage students in the immigration debate while at the same time exploring the topic's historical background. At the core of the unit is a framework of four options for U.S. immigration policy: (1) "Opening Ourselves to the World"; (2) "Balancing Our Responsibilities"; (3) "Competing in a Competitive World"; and "Recognizing Our Limits." The intent of the unit is that through exploring a wide range of alternatives, students will gain a deeper understanding of the values underlying specific policy recommendations. Lessons within the unit include role-playing activities, readings, and essay writing. The material includes a lesson plan, suggested student activities, topics for further consideration, supplementary documents for teachers, and a list of 12 suggested readings. (LBG)
