Work Is Here to Stay, Alas.
Levitan, Sar A.; Johnston, William B.
Based on the numbers published by the U. S. Bureau of the Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and other sources, the book examines what has happened to work in America during the present century, analyzes the attempts to change the nature of that work, and makes projections about the future of work. Though the study reveals far-reaching changes occurring in work and its meaning for individuals, no end to work, no crisis of discontented workers, and no sweeping "humanization" of jobs are foreseen. Topics covered are: What is happening to work?, the meaning of work, the survival of work, the new workforce, dissatisfaction in the workplace, the changing nature of work, the evolving quality of work, work reform in perspective, job redesign experiments, limitations of job reform, and the future of work. Concluding that work may always be a fixture in society, but also perhaps unrecognizably transformed in the future, the authors project that rather than being required labor to produce necessities, work may become whatever purposeful activity individuals wish to engage in, and that the most which can be accomplished is free choice in work for all individuals.
