The material in this report represents some of the earliest results of field research in the languages of Nepal by the Summer Institute of Linguistics, Inc. Some of the results presented here are tentative hypotheses, subject to revision in the light of continuing research. Part I, the present volume, presents phonological data in terms of hierarchically ordered units of phoneme, syllable, stress group, etc. Following an introduction and phonological survey of seven Bodic languages of Nepal, by Austin Hale, the first paper in the section on Tone is concerned with the role of nuclei of feet in the analysis of tone in the Tibeto-Burman languages of Nepal, by Kenneth L. Pike. Other papers dealing with tone are presented by Hale, Warren W. Glover, Bruce C. Hinton, Maria Hari, Doreen Taylor, Pike, Ross Caughley, Dora Bieri, Marlene Schulze, and Kent Gordon. The section on Phonological Segments presents segmental synopses by Hale, Glover, Taylor, Hari, Caughley, Beiri, Schulze, Gordon, and Burkard Schoettelndreyer.
