Institute of International Education
"Open Doors"® is the only long-standing, comprehensive information resource on international students and scholars in the United States and on American students studying abroad for academic credit. "Open Doors" features graphic displays, data tables, and policy-oriented analyses, and is the essential resource for those concerned with U.S. international educational exchange. The Institute of International Education (IIE), one of the largest and most experienced higher education exchange agencies in the world, has conducted an annual statistical survey of international educational exchange activity into and out of the United States since 1948, with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs since 1972. The results of the survey are published annually as the "Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange." The "Open Doors 2018 Report" provides detailed information and analysis on the 1,094,792 international students in the U.S. in 2017/18, including national origin, field of study, geographic location in the U.S., host institutional type, finances, and personal characteristics. The report also contains detailed information on the 332,727 U.S. students who studied abroad for academic credit in 2016/17, on the 135,009 international scholars who taught and conducted research at U.S. colleges and universities in 2017/18, and on the 86,786 international students enrolled in intensive English programs in the U.S. in 2017.
