This index presents references to 413 children's textbooks and tradebooks about Africa. All of the entries were published in the United States between 1970 and 1979. The main purpose of the index is to aid elementary and secondary social studies and language arts classroom teachers as they develop curriculum for African area study programs. Entries are cross referenced in eight indexes--publications and/or places containing reviews, title, author, date, illustrator, reviewer, series, and subject. A wide variety of information is presented under these headings including translator, pagination, cost, grade level, date of review, ethnic groups studied, evaluation, major content, and biographical information about the author. The subject index lists 12 topics (animals, art, biographies, dance, ethnography, geography, history, language, literature, religion, music, and science) and 43 countries including Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda, and Zaire. In discussing the general assessment of each title, the author relates that some of the books are of poor quality but that they were included in the interest of providing a more comprehensive listing.
