Based on evaluation of studies on nonverbal aspects of communication in instructional settings, a teacher training program was developed for nonverbal perceptiveness and expressiveness. An experimental study was conducted to test the effect of the program on secondary school preservice teachers (N=34). Focus was upon vocal delivery, eye contact, facial expressions, gesturing, and body movement, and the effect of these behaviors on clarity, interest, verbal speech quality, assertiveness, and persuasiveness during a microteaching lesson. Results indicated that expressive nonverbal behavior is trainable and that an increase in the level of expressiveness caused an increase in the majority of the variables (clarity, interest, assertiveness, and persuasiveness).
