When the U.S. 2000 Census allowed individuals to identify themselves in two or more racial categories, approximately 6.8 million people identified with more than one race. Interest in racial identity development among college students had just broken the surface in the 1990s, and following the 2000 census, even more attention was paid to the complexity of understanding multiracial identity. Recognizing the increasing diversity on college campuses, coupled with an interest in the identity development of multiracial students, the author illuminates the experiences of multiracial college students by using excerpts from her doctoral dissertation and examples from other sources that focus on multiracial college students. The author uses personal narrative as a student who identifies as multiracial to further illustrate the experience of attending college. She organizes these ideas according to challenges that multiracial students experience in navigating identity-based social and cultural spaces on campus. The author also offers recommendations for college and university educators and leaders attempting to better support multiracial students.
