Moving from I to We: Reorganizing for Collaboration in Higher Education
Kezar, Adrianna
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v37 n6 p50 Nov-Dec 2005
The question addressed in this article and one that has been the focus of the author's research is: how can colleges and universities have greater success with collaborative work? The author argues that to foster group and cross-divisional activities that have trouble succeeding in a context structured to support solo work, academic organizations need to be redesigned. Just how that might be done is suggested in a study of four universities that have undertaken just such a redesign. Based on the findings of this study, the author suggests eight key organizational features that characterize an institutional environment conducive to collaborative work: (1) a campus mission that stresses its importance; (2) networks of faculty and staff; (3) structures that support collaboration; (4) rewards for collaborative work; (5) priority placed on cooperative ventures by senior-level administrators; (6) pressures for collective efforts from external groups; (7) a distinctive set of campus values; and (8) initiatives in place to learning the value of collaboration. In this article the author tries to help institutions see how they might be more responsive to these pressures and change the way they work. This entails redesigning organizational contexts to accommodate collaboration.
