This article presents the personal literacy journey of the author that originated while driving through Scotland. The journey serves as one touchstone of his own personal and professional life. The author shares what he finds on "this" particular journey: (1) Particular (and often peculiar) interest; (2) Active engagement of the four language modes: listening, speaking, reading, and writing; (3) The use of multiple sources and technologies; and (4) Passion--the most important element. Stories, passion, interest, multiple sources, varied language use--all of these form a particular chain of events. Indeed, they are a particular chain or pattern of stories, and together they highlight for the author the vital elements of literacy and adult literacy education. The author believes that his lifelong literacy journey in general and his Scottish journey in particular provide insights on the kinds of practices educators should be promoting in adult literacy programs. Just as he has had to accommodate (often grudgingly) new technologies in order to meet the demands of his academic position, all adults will have to (at least indirectly) address the issues of multiple literacy texts and resources in a rapidly changing world. These economic and social demands help shape, for better or worse, everyone's particular literacies. For him, still a neophyte with computer technology, these demands have enriched his literacy life.
