A graduate follow-up study was conducted for the University of Illinois Institute of Aviation by surveying all graduates for the period 1950-1978. Four major areas were covered in the written questionnaires: employment, education, flight related activities, and graduate satisfaction with the Institute. Based on the responses received from 513 individuals who represent 76 percent of those surveyed, it was concluded that (1) the Institute successfully prepares students for careers in aviation; (2) for the most part graduates are able to find aviation related employment; (3) a high number of respondents continue their education after leaving the Institute; (4) certification as an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic has been beneficial to most graduates' careers although few graduates actually work as mechanics; and (5) maximum graduate satisfaction is in flight instruction, maintenance instruction, and flight training equipment. Recommendations for improvements included the following: maintenance training equipment should be updated and larger physical facilities should be provided; the Airframe and Powerplant curriculum should be more theoretical; a flight engineers course should be offered; occupational placement and counseling services should be upgraded; and a degree program should be established.
