First Days of Schools: A Good Beginning. R&D Report No. 7206.
Huling-Austin, Leslie; Emmer, Edmund T.
This report describes some of the procedures for helping first-year teachers begin the school year which were used in the Model Teacher Induction Program (MTIP). The first section briefly describes the development of the MTIP, a research-based program dealing with specific issues facing first-year teachers. Section two, which focuses on the beginning teacher, describes classroom management training provided to first-year teachers in the MTIP. The third section, on support teachers, discusses training provided to support teachers in diagnosing and responding to the concerns of first-year teachers, with special emphasis on the first day of school. Section four, on the principal's role in establishing a good beginning, provides information derived from the actions of principals in the MTIP study schools and their suggestions made during later interviews related to helping first-year teachers at the beginning of school.
