Traveling to other countries to see other cultures rejuvenates one's spirit and broadens one's perspective. In this article, the author, who is an elementary art teacher shares his experiences on his visit to South Korea in the spring of 2005. The purpose of the tour was to visit potters who fire their work in traditional wood fired, hill-climbing kilns. These are called dragon kilns because they resemble fiery dragons at night, ascending the hillside with flames leaping from their sides. The potters graciously opened their studios and demonstrated their methods of working, and provided tea. The tour group consisted of fifteen potters and teachers from around the United States. There was much sharing, learning, and friendships made as they bussed across Korea. On his return, he began art lessons with each grade by asking students to locate Korea on a world map and discussed current events that have placed Korea in the news such as South Korea's stem cell research, Samsung electronics, and Hyundai cars, as well as North Korea's saber rattling as a nuclear threat. Moreover, the author encourages other educators to venture beyond their backyards, both for the nourishment of their souls and the enrichment of the students. (Contains 3 resources.)
