The Australian colleges of advanced education have been developed since the mid-1960's mainly on the initiative of the federal government to create a separate sector of higher education parallel to the universities. They illustrate "academic drift," a process whereby non-university institutions aspire to become more like universities, which has been accelerated by their faculties. (Editor/LBH)
