Through Challenge and Support: Facilitator Expectations of and Interactions with Students in Co-Curricular Leadership Institutes
Haber-Curran, Paige; McRee, Michael A.
Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, v33 n1 p83-109 2022
In this qualitative study the authors examined the teaching and facilitation practices of facilitators in multi-day co-curricular leadership programs for college students. Building on Bain's (2004b) notable study on the practices of effective college teachers, the study focused on teaching in co-curricular contexts. In-depth interviews of 15 individuals identified as the best facilitators by their respective organizations resulted in identification of four themes describing expectations facilitators had of student participants in the institutes; five themes emerged describing how facilitators treat students. Findings suggest the importance of employing strategies that both challenge and support students to facilitate their development and learning.
