Toward a Visual Culture: Educating Through Television.
Gattegno, Caleb
Because the author believes that one learns more through sight than through language and learns it more quickly and comprehensively, he feels that television is the most likely medium to revolutionize the process of education. He explores the possibilities of creating a visual culture via television, basing his proposals on an examination of the learning patterns and viewing habits of both children and adults. The purely visual aspects of learning are emphasized. To illustrate the differences between horizontal and vertical programing, the author outlines several specific educational television prorams for preschool children. He also proposes television programming to meet the educational needs of other age groups. In conclusion, he summarizes his observations and opinions about the ongoing process of changing and expanding the present visual culture. Appendixes contain a description of a new musical notation system for television, additional background for the reading lessons proposed in the text, and a chart of the signs and sounds of the English language.
