Perhaps more than any other measure of higher education, college completions provide an indication of the contributions of this important sector to the economy and to society at large. Measured by the number and kinds of degrees and certificates awarded during a given period, completions represent the output produced by colleges. Degree completions allow for the assessment of a variety of issues pertaining to higher education, ranging from minority access and gender equity to the role of higher education in supplying the highly educated and skilled workers needed to sustain economic growth. This article describes the trends in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded in New England. It discusses the impact of these trends on the college-educated labor supply in the region.
