A survey of 500 Black female freshwomen and seniors at two Black and four predominantly White colleges revealed that adverse conditions at White schools are more likely to encourage self-reliance and assertiveness. Supportive conditions at Black schools encourage social passivity and may undercut academic gains made at Black schools. (Author/ML)
