In Praise of My Language.
Fishman, Joshua A.
Working Papers in Educational Linguistics, v9 n2 p1-11 Fall 1993
This paper highlights a new approach to the topic of language consciousness. Although a good deal has already been learned about the topic in connection with such questions as: "When and among whom does language consciousness arise?"; "When is it stronger and when is it weaker?"; and "What does it lead its adherents to do on behalf of their own beloved language and in opposition to completing language?" one element has been missing, namely, an approach that would enable scholars to capture and appreciate the world view, the belief system, and the emotional motivational readiness for overt behavior that language so often entails. The paper discusses the tendency of ethnic and national groups to cultivate and advocate "my" language over all others in terms of the focus on the internal emotional and historical resources of a given culture.
