Pedal On! Mini-Units and Learning Activities on Bicycles for Grades 6 through 9.
Finn, Peter; And Others
One of a series of eleven curriculum manuals which cover the four transportation topics of public transportation, transportation and the environment, transportation safety, and bicycles for elementary, secondary and adult levels, this manual covers the topic of bicycling for grades 6-9. The manual contains forty-seven learning activities grouped into ten mini-units. Each mini-unit consists of a lesson plan component and an individual learning activities component. The first mini-unit provides a survey of issues related to bicycles; the rest are as follows: studying the recreational and commuting uses of bicycles, identifying safe bicycling practices, investigating why many people ride dangerously, considering how to encourage other people to ride safely, studying how to buy a bicycle, learning to maintain a bicycle, investigating the prevention of bicycle theft, identifying when and how to seek redress of grievances, and identifying and promoting bicycle facilities. A final section offers additional activities that may be used to evaluate or supplement evaluation of an activity or mini-unit. Also included are references for further study resources and masters for reproduction of role profiles, game boards, maps, and other distributable materials. (A curriculum guide, CE 014 028, is also available for use with the manuals.) (TA)
