Invited Reaction: Examining the Role of Perceived Leader Behavior on Temporary Employees' Organizational Commitment and Citizenship Behavior

Felfe and Franke share the authors' belief that contingent workers play an increasing role among the workforce in general (Desiderio, Djibo, & Price, 2010). As the authors state, the increase of temporary work is primarily due to economic demands. Particularly when confronted with seasonal or economic fluctuations, contingent work may be a means to enhance efficiency and flexibility. However, it is astonishing that there are only a few studies that have considered the specific context of contingent work. Because of their limited time perspective, contingent or temporary workers may not be able to build long-term relationships and emotional attachments to their organizations, leaders, and colleagues as compared to their counterparts with traditional permanent contracts. As a consequence, temporary workers may even reduce their engagement and be less productive. Therefore, Felfe and Franke believe that the authors pick up an important topic and raise unresolved questions with high theoretical and practical relevance. Although Felfe and Franke highly appreciate the merit of this study to address this issue, they will mention in this commentary some concerns with regard to the methodology and the interpretation of the results. They will also try to provide some recommendations for future research.
