Growing up with the Bilingual Education Act: One Educator's Journey
Escamilla, Kathy
Bilingual Research Journal, v41 n4 p369-387 2018
The Bilingual Education Act (BEA) was a signature piece of legislation and was especially significant as a legislative accomplishment for Latinos and Native Americans as part of the Great Society programs and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. While Senator Ralph Yarborough of Texas and President Lyndon Johnson have historically been credited for being the force behind the passage of the BEA, it is important to note the significant role that civil rights and community groups at the state and local levels played in the passage of this act. In this article, the author will utilize the research tools of historical chronology along with the qualitative research method of autoethnography with the intent of examining how the BEA over time and in its various iterations impacted aspiring teachers, administrators, and future researchers like her. She will also examine how the legacy of the BEA has continued to influence the bilingual field long after its demise in 2002.
