Sexual Misconduct Discourses within a Gendered Campus Environment
Enke, Kathryn A. E.
Journal of College Student Development, v59 n4 p479-485 Jul-Aug 2018
This study focused on how Title IX and sexual misconduct discourses on campus reflect a gendered campus environment. It employed critical discourse analysis as a framework for understanding the relationships between language in use on campus and the social structures, power relationships, and identity work represented within that language. The study was conducted at two single-sex residential Catholic colleges in the Midwestern United States which collaborate to provide a coeducational academic experience for students. Data collection included focus groups that examined students' attitudes about sexual misconduct issues on campus and students' reflections on the ways that understandings of and discussions about sexual misconduct on campus are gendered. Students engaged three discourses to articulate their understandings of sexual misconduct: (1) discourses of heteronormativity; (2) discourses of uncertainty; and (3) discourses of community. Students also requested mandatory and ongoing Title IX training for students, faculty, and staff, and some females identified targeted locations on campus where they felt unsafe at times.
