This document is a historical account of the first 50 years (1959-98) of the Syracuse University (New York) School of Education's Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation (IDD&E) program. Ten chapters cover the following topics: (1) a capsule history, including a brief review of program leaders and a decade-by-decade review of program highlights; (2) IDD&E faculty, including schools of origin, faculty role, and a faculty chronology; (3) alumni, including statistics, where former students are now, the role of graduate students as instructors and staff, international students, and books written by graduates; (4) the academic program, including curriculum development over the years; (5) academic and service programs, focusing on the coexistence of theory and practice; (6) university-wide relationships, highlighting cooperation with other departments; (7) international activities involving faculty and students; (8) sponsored programs, including federal and international contracts; (9) professional leadership and accomplishments of alumni and faculty; and (10) the contributions and potential benefits of educational technology over the past 50 years and a view to the future. Appendices include a list of graduates of the Audiovisual Education, Instructional Communications, Instructional Technology, and IDD&E program, by year and degree; and a list of current positions of graduates who responded to a 1997 survey, by field.
