Selecting Adult Basic Education Materials.
Dutton, Donnie
The topic of the West Tennessee Adult Basic Education Workshop, held at Jackson, Tennessee in April, 1970, was the selection of adult basic education materials; 89 persons (teachers and supervisors) attended. This report contains an edited form of the presentation and the results of the evaluation. A profile of the adult basic education population in West Tennessee was compared with a national profile; characteristics of the adult learner and how these characteristics affect his learning were discussed; reading skills were reviewed; and characteristics of the most widely used, commercially produced materials in the country were described. Data were gathered on demography, participant reactions, and the overall effectiveness of the instructor; the Kropp-Verner Attitude Scale was administered to obtain a composite rating of the workshop. The average participant was female, Negro, 40 or older, and married; less than 30% had Master's degrees, but about one-half had had more than two years' experience in adult education. The workshop and the instructor were rated very positively, as was the overall value of the workshop. (EB)
