Views of four spokespersons concerning the Federation of University Employees' 10-week strike at Yale University in 1984, which involved clerical and technical workers of Local 34, are presented. Speaking for the college administration, Linda Lorimer reviews the composition of the Local 34 bargaining unit and notables of the contract, and briefly traces the chronology of the labor dispute. Providing the union perspective, John Wilhelm suggests that clerical and technical employees will be unionizing in much greater numbers in the next decade in private colleges and universities. He questions whether the strike was in the best interest of students and faculty and the university as a whole. A faculty view in support of Local 34 is discussed by Jack McKivigan, who traces the events leading to the strike and the dynamics involved, including the Administration's public posture of reasonableness and its private posture of intractability. Support for the university administration is expressed by another faculty member, Donald Kagan, who addresses the effect of the strike on students and faculty. He suggests that if the university were trying to destroy the union in spring 1984, it should not have signed any kind of contract, because that would have left it open for people to try to decertify the union.
