Comparative Financial Statistics for Public Community and Junior Colleges, 1981-82: An Experimental Study of 442 Institutions.
Dickmeyer, Nathan; Cirino, Anna Marie
Drawing from two surveys of 442 public community and junior colleges from across the country, this report presents comparative financial statistics for 1981-82. Chapter 1 provides information on the use of the report in comparing institutional statistics with national and peer group medians; points out limitations of the data; and offers a summary of findings in the areas of expenditures, revenues, service area, and staffing. After chapter 2 provides median figures in the categories of expenditures and revenues, course enrollment distributions, and staff/student ratios for the full sample of 442 colleges, chapter 3 presents quartile statistics for the sample in the same categories. Chapter 4 presents medians and quartiles for institutional peer groups classified by enrollment size and vocational/technical designation. Chapter 5 contains scattergrams designed to illustrate relationships among budgetary, enrollment, and market variables. Report highlights indicate that half of the institutions surveyed: (1) spent more than 61% of their budget on instruction, public service, research, and academic support; (2) enrolled more than 1 in every 19 people in their service area; (3) spent more than 4% of their operating budget on utilities; and (4) had student/faculty ratios for credit instruction of less than 19 to 1. Appendices contain information on study methodology, participating colleges, and peer group composition; sample surveys; and definitions of terms. (HB)
