Three studies of the relationship of Black English (BE) pronunciation to spelling performance are reported in this document. The first study explored a large number of BE pronunciation features. The second included control features that do not have differing pronunciations in BE and standard English (SE). The third examined final consonant clusters only. The studies indicate that differences exist in the degree to which various features of BE pronunciation are associated with BE-related spelling errors. Moreover, feature difficulty in terms of BE-related errors is not what might be expected on the basis of speech data. BE-related errors are more frequently made on grammatical than on nongrammatical features, and SE speakers make many of the same BE-related errors that BE speakers make, but less frequently.
