This book is intended for preservice and inservice training of teachers of elementary reading. The contents discuss: current emphases in reading instruction and research supporting each of the approaches; the stages of reading development as well as the various materials and activities used for teaching each level; the basic reading program, operating the basic reading program in the classroom, and resources for teachers; reading in the primary and intermediate grades; patterns of grouping, flexibility, reading groups, and the informal reading inventory; ways to foster reading interests in students; and the evaluation of reading achievement, including the use of standard tests and informal reading tests.
