Spry Middle School's annual eighth-grade trip to Washington, District of Columbia, coincided with the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian. The museum, with its distinctive curvilinear architecture covered in Kasota limestone, stands as a wonderful testament to the rich culture and history of the many and diverse Native American peoples. Students were lucky enough to view many of the exhibits despite limited time in their travel itinerary and the large number of visitors. The students' artistic journey was continued into the arts and crafts of the Native American upon return to school. The author discusses an art project inspired by the museum visit: Native American blanket paintings. The project involved researching Native American symbolism and the various stages of design within Native American blankets: chief, serape, pictorial, and eye dazzler.
