The Service Society and a Theory of Learning Linking Education, Work, Life.
Cohen, Audrey C.
We are becoming a service based society. Changes in our society all point to the move to a service based society which demands a new educational approach. In such a society human service professionals will be consumer-oriented, cooperators with the citizen, and judged by the citizens and consumers they serve. These workers will serve, advocate for and help the whole person. They will be able to cross institutional lines, areas of specialization, and disciplines. They will achieve these goals through a new learning paradigm (the eight "crystals" and the five "dimensions") and a new assessment tool (the "constructive action"). The eight crystals of ability are: self-assessment and preparation for practice, developing professional relationships with citizens and co-workers, working with others in groups, teaching and communicating, counseling, serving as community liaison, supervising co-workers, and managing change. The five dimensions of performance are purpose, values, self and others, systems, and skills. With the new assessment tool, the constructive action, students synthesize their classroom study and their field experience on a significant effort to improve service. The document includes charts outlining the crystals, performance dimensions, constructive actions and blending theory and practice. (JB)
