Describes the results of a survey of 108 rural South Dakota high school principals. Reports that, although principals envision themselves as instructional leaders, a majority of the day is spent on general managerial duties and discipline, with principals more concerned about task completion than about individuals or school climate. Study investigated whether principals of small, rural high schools perceived role conflict when they served as both principal and athletic director. The 54 self-report questionnaires indicated they did not perceive role conflict but rather general role congruence, and they gave their time freely to many activities in general. (SM)
