In an effort to assess program effectiveness, demographic data derived from institutional records on 161 emotionally troubled youth having participated in the Eckerd Wilderness Program were analyzed in terms of interview data derived from a sample of 27 males and 22 females enrolled in the Eckerd camps March 1, 1968-December 31, 1971. The static instrument yielded demographic data. Among results of interviews using the Eckerd Ex-Camper Interview Schedule were indications respondents felt: camp staff took a special interest in them; a desire to become a better person; trips, problem solving sessions, family conferences, pow-wows, cooking, and games were helpful activities and that they gained useful skills from all but pow-wows and games; the Eckerd program to be superior to other programs experienced; goal achievement was due to strictness of staff, safety of camp, and sharing of problems; the most valuable skills learned were controlling temper, ability to handle problems, talking problems out, and getting along with family; they would choose to return if in trouble; and they would refer a friend who was in difficulty. Follow-up data indicated after departure from camp: a majority received no assistance from camp personnel; 89% returned to school, averaging 2.8 years in school; 31.5% graduated; 72.3% in the first 6 months, 78.8% in the second 6 months, 70.2% in the second year, and 63.8% in the third year had no legal convictions; 78.6% were employed, 30% were married and 21% divorced.
