Effects of Preschool Phoneme Identity Training after Six Years: Outcome Level Distinguished from Rate of Response.
Byrne, Brian; Fielding-Barnsley, Ruth; Ashley, Luise
Journal of Educational Psychology, v92 n4 p659-67 Dec 2000
Reports on a study of Grade 5 children who had been trained in phoneme identity six years earlier. Results reveal that these children were superior to untrained controls on irregular word reading and on a composite list of nonwords, regular words, and irregular words. Preschool instruction in phonemic structure had modest but detectable effects on later reading skill. (Contains 36 references and 3 tables.) (Author/GCP)
