Neighborhood Income and Physical and Social Disorder in Canada: Associations with Young Children's Competencies.
Kohen, Dafna E.; Brooks-Gunn, Jeanne; Leventhal, Tama; Hertzman, Clyde
Child Development, v73 n6 p1844-60 Nov-Dec 2002
Examined the association of neighborhood characteristics on competencies of Canadian preschoolers. Found that verbal ability positively related to residing in neighborhoods with affluent residents and negatively to residing in neighborhoods with poor residents and in neighborhoods with low cohesion, even after controlling for family SES. Behavior problems were higher in neighborhoods with fewer affluent residents, with high unemployment, and with low cohesion, after controlling for family SES. (Author/KB)
