This report presents the results of the ninth survey of foreign language entrance and degree requirements in United States colleges and universities that grant a bachelor of arts degree. The survey was conducted in 1974 by the Modern Language Association, and was directed at foreign language department chairmen. Responses were received from 98.8 percent, or 1,285, of the 1,300 departments to which questionnaires were sent. The study offers an innovation in that chairmen were requested to indicate which specific fields at their institutions require a language for a B.A. major. Table I summarizes changes in institutional requirements between the fall of 1970 and the fall of 1974, while table II summarizes the status of entrance and degree requirements at the 1,285 institutions. Table III outlines departmental foreign language requirements for the B.A. major, while the fourth and fifth tables outline foreign language entrance and degree requirements for the B.A. degree for the years 1957, 1966, 1971 and 1975. A directory of the institutions, listed by state, follows the tables. The supplements to the directory provide information concerning changes in foreign language entrance and degree requirements in colleges and universities since 1971.
