Bridgeman, Brent – Research in Higher Education, 1981
The utility of raw gain analysis for validation of college placement tests is demonstrated with scores from the Descriptive Test of Mathematics Skills. Gains during one semester for students in various freshman level mathematics courses were evaluated. Results suggest that gain analysis is a useful tool for placement test validation. (Author/MLW)

The validity of scores from the Descriptive Tests of Mathematics Skills (DTMS) and the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test--Mathematics (SAT-M) are compared. Results show the DTMS as a valid predictor of remedial level college course grades; the higher level OTMS was as accurate a predictor as the SAT-M for grades in advanced courses.…
