Leveraging Technology for Success in a Challenging Economy
Breeding, Marshall
Computers in Libraries, v30 n3 p24-26 Apr 2010
The global economic crisis of the past 2 years has brought harsh circumstances to most libraries, calling into question many of the ways that librarians allocate resources. Lean budgets force libraries to devise strategies that make the very most of the resources available. Many libraries face the reality of doing more with less, often much less. This context of libraries struggling through the economic downturn makes it necessary to consider the ways that technology can be used not only to reduce costs but, hopefully, to strengthen libraries' standing relative to more prosperous times. The current economic climate presents libraries with the challenge of finding any additional efficiency that might be gained beyond the automation systems in common use today and what new ways of delivering library services might be possible that will improve the relative impact of the library on its users. In this article, the author discusses cost savings strategies for libraries as well as some ways that technology can be used to lower operational cost. These include using collaborative technologies, providing facilities of self-service for patrons, utilizing open source software, Website redesigning, and reducing energy costs associated with computing equipment.
