The Two-Year College Instructor Today.
Cohen, Arthur M.; Brawer, Florence B.
With an emphasis on humanities instructors, this book presents a profile of the characteristics of the two-year college faculty nationwide. It reviews the current status of the profession and describes the methodology of the 1975 national humanities faculty survey on which the book is based. Additional chapters focus on two-year college teachers' attitudes and values, level of work satisfaction, "functional potential" (a construct built on psychodynamic principles of human functioning), orientation toward curriculum and instruction, concern for students, research orientation, development and preparation, perceptions of the university as a reference point, and concern with the humanities. It also compares full- and part-time instructors and doctorate and non-doctorate degree holders. The final chapters summarize the significant findings of the survey of the humanities faculty, offer an interpretation of the faculty as a professional group, and make recommendations for modifications in faculty selection, preparation, and working environment. Appended are the faculty questionnaire and tabulated responses. (DC)
