Female Counselor Educators: Encouraging and Discouraging Factors in Academia
Hill, Nicole R.; Leinbaugh, Tracy; Bradley, Carla; Hazler, Richard
Journal of Counseling & Development, v83 n3 p374 Sum 2005
The current study explores the encouraging and discouraging factors influencing female counselor educators. This study asked 115 female counselor educators to rate each of 91 items as to how encouraging or discouraging each item was to them as faculty members. The means and standard deviations were calculated for each of the 91 items of the PMBCE. On the basis of a 5-point scale, female counselor educators found no items within the range of very discouraging (1) to discouraging (2). Analysis of the results of the MUNSH provided a measure of subjective well-being for female counselor educators. Subscale scores and overall scores suggest that female counselor educators have a high level of perceived well-being both in their current state (Affect) and as a longterm trait function (Experience). Relationship and support issues are the best ways to categorize the most encouraging items identified by these female professionals. It was clearly those factors (8 out of 10) that centered on providing supportive, growth-producing interactions with students and other professionals that these women cherished most.
