These proceedings contain 37 papers from 51 authors noted for their expertise in the field of visual literacy. The collection is divided into three sections: (1) "Examining Visual Literacy" (including, in addition to a 7-year International Visual Literacy Association bibliography covering the period from 1983-1989, papers on the perception of symbols, the effect of graphic formats on the interpretation of quantitative data, the effect of artistic style on the selection of books by children, media literacy education, the effectiveness of flow diagrams in learning verbal chains, and the development of visual-spatial understanding in fifth grade females); (2) "Extending Visual Literacy" (including papers on teaching visual literacy, visual literacy outreach possibilities, the structured writing technique, implications of creativity research for managers of instructional design, a visual approach to group authorship, and video report cards); and (3) "Experiencing Visual Literacy" (including papers on three dimensional video, advertising and persuasion, use of innovative electronic manipulation in storytelling, and the power of electronic technologies as tools for thinking and learning).
