Learning in the Presence of the Other
Boys, Mary C.
Religious Education, v103 n5 p502-506 Oct 2008
The author observes that now many religious educators are grappling with the realization that forming persons in faith today necessitates teaching them "to be religious interreligiously." Yet, there is one inter-religious relationship that is absolutely fundamental to Christianity: its relationship with Judaism in both the past and present. The author believes it is incumbent on all Christian educators to examine their theology of the Christian-Jewish relationship. This article is a brief story of how the author came to this belief, and what it means to her. The author stresses that her learning in the presence of the religious other has enlarged her horizons on the field of religious education, and her educational studies have enabled her to design dialogical process that supports substantive conversation across religious borders.
