The Top 100 Associate Degrees Conferred
Borden, Victor M. H.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, v28 n7 p12-18 May 2011
Academic year 2009-2010 was a banner year for associate degree conferrals in the United States. In just one year, the total number of degrees awarded increased from slightly less than 790,000 to nearly 850,000, an increase of 8 percent. Minorities receive one-third of all associate degrees conferred in the U.S., with nearly equal numbers going to Black and Hispanic students, who together represent 80 percent of minority associate degree recipients. The data for this analysis are included within the Completions survey of the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics' Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Set. This year's Top 100 analysis is based on the associate degrees conferred during the 2009-2010 academic year. The institutions appearing in the published lists are ranked according to the total number of degrees awarded to minority students across all disciplines as well as in specific disciplines. Each list provides the total for the prior year (2008-2009), followed by the current year (2009-2010) counts for males, females and total. The final two columns show two percentages. The first percentage indicates how the number of the minority category degree recipients compares to all degree recipients at that institution within that discipline. The second percentage indicates the percentage change in that minority groups' number of graduates at that institution from the prior year. The lists containing total degrees for each and all minority groups include 100 institutions. (Contains 2 tables.)
